Project leadership and Communication....
While there are many attributes that make someone a great project manager, I would say there are two attributes that top the charts for me.
Leadership and Communication;
You can balance the project budget like an accountant, write a project plan like a possessed fiend, and construct a perfectly laid out scope, but in the end being an exceptional leader and over-communicator will make or break a project in my opinion. So those are my focus on not only a project but also in my professional development.
On leadership; I make an unbridled effort to inspire the project goal and vision to the project staff. I let them know that their participation is critical to project success. I also show them that the project not only benefits its implied need, but it also benefits them as well.
On communication; OVER- communicate, (i need to thank my wife for that). It's not just enough to write, call and email, it's not enough to speak, hear and listen, but the project staff must "understand" the value of the project. This can only be achieved by repeated communication.......
